Microneedling, CoolSculpting, and EmSculpting – Perfect Treatments for Winter

While the winter months in most climates can seem to drag on forever, there are actually benefits to this season since it is the ideal time to go in for treatments and procedures that require limited or no sun exposure. Here are a few procedures to get excited about this Winter season.

Microneedling

While the title sounds a little terrifying, microneedling is actually a near painless procedure. After applying a numbing cream, minuscule perforations all over the skin prompt a healing response which then promotes collagen production. Collagen are protein fibers that enhance your skin’s natural smoothness and suppleness. It is important to avoid UV rays from sunlight for a couple weeks following treatment. The initial side effects from the procedure are redness and swelling that will disappear well within two weeks, but you can apply makeup on the skin the following day in order to minimize the appearance of redness until it fades. Your doctor will come up with a personalized treatment plan and upkeep/at home regimen, but most people have very positive results that last from six months to a full year.

CoolScupting

This is a great option for those that are near their ideal weight (with a BMI of 25 or under) but have some stubborn fat areas that won’t respond to diet and exercise. While it is still possible to do this procedure when you do not meet this criteria, the results may not be as drastic and you will most likely need more treatments instead of only one or two.

CoolSculpting is the process of freezing fat cells, thus killing them so they are disposed of through your body’s natural processes. It is FDA approved and has been described as relatively painless. Mostly people only feel some tugging, pulling, and a brief period of intense cold before numbness sets in. The procedure itself takes around 45 minutes to an hour and many people can relax though the entire process. Gel pads are carefully between your skin and the actual machine to protect the skin from frostbite. Usually, these results are completely permanent as long as you do not gain weight, thus causing other fat cells to grow. This is a fantastic option for someone who is frustrated by specific areas where fat is especially persistent.

EmSculpting

EmSculpting is a relatively new procedure that has fantastic results. Like CoolSculpting, the goal is to tone the body. But where CoolSculpting’s main focus is targeting and destroying fat cells, EmSculpting aims to tone and grow muscles. Essentially, EmSculpting causes high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM) pulses to your muscles which generates supra-maximal contractions in the muscles that can stimulate more muscle fibers than can be attained in regular exercise. The side effects are minimal and there is almost no discomfort during the procedure. Most people reported that they felt sore in the area treated as if they had done an intense workout. Unlike CoolSculpting, the results of EmSculpting are not permanent, however they can be preserved with regular exercise and follow up treatments every six months.

These procedures are excellent options for beating the winter blues and keeping you feeling your absolute best.

What Can Liposuction Do For Me?

Liposuction removes unwanted fat which improves the overal shape and contour of the body.

The target areas most common in men include abdomen, waist and flanks (love handles). In women the areas are abdomen, hips, thighs (saddle bags) and buttocks.

Other possible sites include: upper arms, back, chest, cheek, chin, neck, calves and ankles.

What Can’t Liposuction Do For Me?

Liposuction can take care of excessive fat in most areas, but it is important to realize it is not a substitute for diet and exercise. It has limitations on how much fat can safely removed and sometimes another procedure, i.e. abdominoplasty, may provide better contours. Liposuction is not a tool to remove dimpling or cellulite and it does not affect skin laxity. Many body types can improve with liposuction, but we see the ideal candidate as those who are otherwise healthy, active but have certain areas (love handles, saddle, bags, etc) that don’t seem to improve despite hard work.

How Is Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction has several forms but essential to all devices and types are a few key points. All liposuction procedures use a small wand type device is used to introduce fluid that helps to break up the fat cells, reduce the amount of bleeding and discomfort from the procedure. Once the fluid has been introduced a similar wand or cannula is introduced to remove excess fat from trouble spots. The cannula insertion requires a small incision, usually less than 1/4″ long, which is placed so as to not be noticeable with healing. For best results, each area is usually approached from two different insertion sites. Once healed these scars are often difficult to even find.

After surgery you will be fitted with a tight fitting garment to promote resolution of the swelling and quicker recovery. This is generally worn for at least 2 weeks.

Expected Results/Recovery

Results from liposuction procedures takes patience. Early on there is some fluid retention in these areas and the swelling can take weeks to resolve. Look for improvement in the following weeks, with continued improvement in the areas suctioned over several months. Provided one’s weight remains stable, the results may be very long-term.

Is Liposuction Safe?
Complications from liposuction are usually mild and avoidable if the plastic surgeon is well trained. More common downsides of the procedure can be asymmetries or contour irregularities where the fat was removed or bruising as a result of removing fat. Less common and more severe complications involve injury to other tissues in the area such as the deeper organs or the overlying skin, infection, blot clots. Most concerning are reports of small pieces of fat or blood clots entering the blood stream and fatally traveling to the lungs or heart.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

The average cost of liposuction is $2,866, according to 2013 statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The average fee referenced above does not include anesthesia, operating room facilities or other releated expenses. What is the cost of liposuction?

Dr. Marion’s prices generally start around $2400 with additional areas around $750 each. (Fee are approximate)

Mommy Makover

Among the many options for surgical enhancement, the mommy makeover ranks high among Utahans. This reflects the states population of healthy active mom’s who tend to have numerous pregnancies and often begin motherhood at a relatively young age. The goal is to reverse or undo some of the changes which occur to the breasts and abdomen as a result of multiple, often close together, pregnancies. This enhancement isn’t about changing the look of the person, but more of a restoration to a previous form.

Mommy makeover can include a collection of procedures to the breasts and abdomen, often combined in one surgery. The list of procedures that can be performed is long and the best options will be different for each individual patient. Common changes of pregnancy that are corrected are sagging and deflated breasts, excess skin, stretch marks or bulging to the abdomen. Options for enhancement include: breast augmentation, abdominoplasty (aka tummy tuck) with its variations of extended abdominoplasty, mini-abdominoplasty, marriage abdominoplasty, etc), liposuction, mastopexy (aka breast lift), breast reduction, etc.

Recovery after any procedure will depend on the nature and course of the operation itself. In general, after breast augmentation combined with an abdominoplasty patients stay overnight in the surgical center. Once patients are home they are limited in lifting or heavy exertion at least until seen in follow-up, which is within 3-5 days. Typically patients feel ready to return to work within 1-2 weeks. Patients will have some days that are better than others, but the general feeling after surgery is elation at the results.
